How to Play One Piece TCG

Two captains. Two crews. Two life pools. The first captain to take 0 life and lose another point — or run out of cards — surrenders. Bandai's OP TCG is fast, color-driven, and built around a unique 10-card DON!! deck that fuels everything you do.

Quick Overview

  • 2-player head-to-head, ~15 minutes per game
  • Each player brings a Leader card (your starting captain) + a 50-card main deck + a 10-card DON!! deck
  • Leader gives you a life total (typically 4–5) and locks the deck's color identity
  • Win by reducing your opponent's life to 0 and dealing one more point of damage — OR forcing them to draw from an empty deck
Wano Tip: If you've played MTG, OP's color identity will feel familiar — but DON!! is its own thing. Don't confuse DON!! cards (your active resource) with mana — they're rented per-turn and rest after use, like the Pokemon energy you wish you could untap.

Card Types

Leader

Your captain. One per deck. Sets your colors and life. Stays in play the whole game.

Character

Crew that battles. Has Cost, Power, Counter and effects. Most cards in your deck.

Event

One-shot effects. Played from hand, resolved, then discarded.

Stage

Persistent location effects. Stay in play and modify what's possible.

DON!! card

Resource cards. Lives in your DON!! deck. Powers Characters / Leaders during attacks.

The Six Colors

Every Leader is one or two colors. Your main deck cards must share at least one color with your Leader. Each color has its own personality:

Red — Aggro & rush Blue — Bounce & control Green — Rest tricks Purple — Big DON ramp Black — Cost reduction & removal Yellow — Life manipulation

Turn Structure

  1. Refresh — Set all your rested cards back to active.
  2. Draw — Take 1 card. Player going first skips their first draw.
  3. DON!! Phase — Add up to 2 DON!! cards from your DON!! deck to your active resources.
  4. Main Phase — Play Characters, Events, Stages. Attach DON!! to Characters or your Leader to boost their Power for attacks. Declare attacks.
  5. End — End-of-turn effects resolve. Pass to opponent.
Counter Tip: When you're attacked, you can play any number of Counter cards from your hand to boost your defending card's Power. Knowing when to burn a +2000 Counter is the difference between winning and losing.

Combat & Trigger

An attack succeeds if attacker's Power > defender's Power (after Counter cards from hand). When a Leader takes damage, they take a card off the top of their life and add it to their hand. If that card has a Trigger ability, the defender may activate it for free. Triggers can flip games — every attack into life is a coin flip you have to plan around.

Common Keywords

  • Rush — Character can attack the turn it's played.
  • Blocker — Can intercept attacks by switching to defender mid-attack.
  • Double Attack — Deals 2 damage instead of 1 if it hits a Leader.
  • Banish — Removed instead of being trashed (matters for cards that recur from trash).
  • Counter +X — Can be played from hand during opponent's attack to add X power to your defender.
  • Trigger — When this card is taken from life, the defending player may activate this effect for free.

Deck-Building Rules

  • Exactly 1 Leader
  • Exactly 50 cards in your main deck
  • Exactly 10 DON!! cards in your DON!! deck
  • Max 4 copies of any non-Leader card by name
  • All main-deck cards must share a color with your Leader
  • Banlist enforced per format (Standard / Beta) — see the deck builder for active restrictions

Quick FAQ

Do I need to buy real cards to play on TCG Zen?

No. Our virtual pack sim, collection tracker, and (coming soon) deck builder all run on the cards you've ripped digitally. Real-world ownership is tracked separately if you want it.

How is this different from Pokémon TCG?

The biggest gap: One Piece's DON!! deck is a separate 10-card "energy" pile that resets every turn instead of being attached to creatures. Combat also has the Counter step from hand, which Pokemon doesn't have.

What's the best Leader to start with?

The official Starter Decks (ST-01 Straw Hat, ST-02 Worst Generation, ST-03 Seven Warlords) are designed for new players. Pick the crew you like — they're all balanced.

How does TCG Zen track Manga Rares and Alt Arts?

Both layer on top of base rarity in our pack sim — same as Bandai's pull model. Manga Rares pull at ~5%, Alt Arts at ~8% per pack, independent of the base rarity slot.
